The
submarine industrial base is composed of approximately 350 major
equipment suppliers with a total of more than 4,000 companies,
and stretches across 47 states. In addition, countless other part
fabricators and raw material suppliers contribute to this first
tier supplier base. The submarine industry includes both large
firms and small businesses, some of whom are wholly dependent
on submarine work for survival. Combined, these companies provide
the United States with the ability to design, build, and maintain
our nuclear submarine force.
In an era when stable manufacturing jobs are decreasing in America,
the submarine industrial base provides some of the best jobs in
the country. The submarine industry provides professional, technical,
and manufacturing positions in the fields of electronics, hydraulics,
nuclear propulsion, acoustics, metallurgy, sensors, weapons, electrical
equipments, silent pumps and valves, advanced materials, and other
challenging fields. It takes the world’s best workers
with the most advanced technology to design and build the systems
and equipment for the world’s best submarines.
